For many, the spell of rain in Delhi in the last week of July might have come as a blessing after the relentless summer. But for those living along the Yamuna river, it proved to be a nightmare. Water released from the Hathnikund barrage in Haryana, combined with the rain, led the river to breach the danger mark. The Yamuna river’s water level in Delhi crossed the warning mark of 204.83 metres by 10 a.m. on July 28. A flood-alert for the city was called and the old Yamuna bridge was closed. Though the waters have begun to recede, it will be some time before those who were evacuated get back to their homes.
